SMART-certification signifies that a dentist has completed the IAOMT’s educational program related to dental amalgam mercury removal. This program is based on up-to-date scientific research and includes rigorous recommendations for removing existing dental mercury amalgam fillings to assist in reducing the potential negative health outcomes of mercury exposure to patients, dental professionals, dental students, office staff, and others. The IAOMT’s recommendations are known as the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART).

As with most academic educational programming, upon completion of the course, the dentist determines the specific methods and techniques that will be employed in his/her own dental practice. This is because health care professionals must make their own informed judgments in their practices.

Patients requesting SMART should consult with their dentist (even if they are SMART-certified) to review expectations for dental amalgam removal before it is conducted. The IAOMT encourages the use of a patient-dentist checklist for the SMART recommendations before the amalgam removal process begins so that expectations are clearly identified. The IAOMT advocates and encourages patient-professional dialogue, as this establishes open communication and understanding of treatments and practices. Patients must always exercise their own best judgment when using the services of any health care practitioner.
