SMART-certification signifies that a dentist has completed the IAOMT’s educational program about rigorous recommendations for removing existing dental mercury amalgam fillings. As with most academic educational programming, upon completion of the course, the dentist determines the specific methods and techniques that will be employed in his/her own dental practice. This is because health care professionals must make their own informed judgments in their practices.

Patients requesting SMART should consult with their dentist (even if they are SMART-certified) to review expectations for dental amalgam removal before it is conducted. Patients must always exercise their own best judgement when using the services of any health care practitioner. The IAOMT encourages the use of a patient-dentist checklist for the SMART recommendations before the amalgam removal process begins so that expectations are clearly identified.

If your country is not listed, there are currently no SMART Certified dentists in the country you selected.  Consider broadening your search to a wider region or to include all members of the IAOMT by selecting a “Full Search” of our Directory, which also lists Accredited, Fellow, Master, and General Members.

Dentists in Costa Rica, however willing and eager, have no viable options for using amalgam separators at the present time. Consequently, the IAOMT and the SMART program are granting a temporary exception to the amalgam separator requirement of the SMART protocol for dentists in Costa Rica who have fulfilled all other requirements of the SMART certification processed. It is hoped that a solution to this dilemma can be arrived at in the near future.

Advanced Education
Master–(MIAOMT)
A Master is a member who has achieved Accreditation and Fellowship and has completed 500 hours of credit in research, education, and service (in addition to the 500 hours for Fellowship, for a total of 1,000 hours). A Master has also submitted a scientific review approved by the Scientific Review Committee (in addition to the scientific review for Fellowship, for a total of two scientific reviews).
Fellow–(FIAOMT)
A Fellow is a member who has achieved Accreditation and submitted one scientific review that the Scientific Review Committee has approved. A Fellow has also completed 500 hours of credit in research, education, and service beyond that of an Accredited member.
Accredited–(AIAOMT)
The Accredited member has successfully completed a seven-unit course on biological dentistry, including units on fluoride, biological periodontal therapy, hidden pathogens in the jawbone and root canals, and more. This course involves an examination of over 50 scientific and medical research articles, participation in an e-learning component of the curriculum which includes six videos, and demonstration of mastery on seven detailed unit tests. An Accredited member is a member who has also attended the Fundamentals of Biological Dentistry Course and at least two IAOMT conferences. Note that an Accredited member must first become SMART Certified and may or may not have achieved a higher level of certification such as Fellowship or Mastership. SMART Member
A SMART Certified member has successfully completed a course on mercury and safe dental mercury amalgam removal, including three units consisting of scientific readings, online learning videos, and tests. The crux of this essential course on the IAOMT’s Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART) involves learning about the rigorous safety measures and equipment for reducing exposures to mercury releases during the removal of amalgam fillings, as well as showing an oral case presentation for safe amalgam removal to members on the education committee. A SMART-Certified member may or may not have achieved a higher level of certification such as Accreditation, Fellowship, or Mastership.
Hygiene Master Member
A Hygiene Master is a member who has achieved Hygiene Accreditation and Hygiene Fellowship and has completed 250 hours of credit in research, education, and service (in addition to the 250 hours for Hygiene Fellowship, for a total of 500 hours). A Hygiene Master has also submitted a scientific review approved by the Scientific Review Committee (in addition to the scientific review for the Hygiene Fellowship, for a total of two scientific reviews).
Hygiene Fellow Member
A Hygiene Fellow is a member who has achieved Hygiene Accreditation and submitted one scientific review approved by the Scientific Review Committee. A Hygiene Fellow has also completed 250 hours of credit in research, education, and service beyond that of a Hygiene Accredited member.
Biological Dental Hygiene Member–(HIAOMT)
A biological dental hygiene member certifies to the professional community and the general public that a member hygienist has been trained and tested in the comprehensive application of biological dental hygiene. The course includes ten units; the three units described in SMART Certification and the seven units described in the Accreditation definitions above; however, the coursework in the Biological Dental Hygiene Accreditation is specifically designed for dental hygienists.
General Member
A member who has joined the IAOMT to become better educated and trained about biological dentistry but has not acquired the SMART Certification, Accreditation, or Biological Dental Hygiene Accreditation. All new members are supplied with information on our recommended procedures and protocols for safe amalgam removal.
